  • Live in opulence and classic fashion with one of our orangeries. In the 17th century, the orangery was used by wealthy families as a garden building for exotic shrubs. Now, an orangery can make a luxurious addition to almost any property.

Orangeries are sophisticated project extensions that can give you valuable additional living space. They are very similar to conservatories but tend to have a harder structure consisting of dwarf walls and solid roof edges. The rest of the roof is made up of glass, allowing your room to be warmed by the sun and fill with light naturally.

If you’re looking for a low-cost extension that’s also more hard-wearing than your standard conservatory, an orangery might be the perfect option for your project. While orangeries can make a stunning addition to your project, they’re also set to last as an integral part of your property for years to come.

Common Questions

What is an orangery?

Orangeries are spaces reminiscent of conservatories, but with added brickwork. Its traditional look involves dwarf walls and pillars all around the building. The roof can include lantern or glass pods to bring in enough light, whilst the remaining walls and the middle of the ceiling tend to be glass-made. Orangeries get their name from their ability to provide the correct climate for orange, lemon and lime trees in northern European countries. Though they used to be associated with luxury and expense, orangeries are now popular amongst projectowners wanting a light and stylish addition to their property.

What is the difference between an orangery and a conservatory?

Conservatories are mostly made of glass panels to fulfil its main purpose of bringing in lots of sunlight through the windows, doors, and ceilings. Orangeries make use of brick or stone to create a more solid construction. Though this means less light is able to enter the structure in comparison to conservatories, orangeries don’t get so hot during the summer months and can better retain heat throughout the winter. The function of an orangery is similar to a conservatory, but the way it is built makes it feel a bit more separated from the rest of the house.

Is an orangery warmer than a conservatory?

Orangeries are partly made from solid materials rather than just glass which tends to make them warmer than your average conservatory. Nonetheless, the type of glass and materials used do continue to influence the amount of heat that is insulated. Double glazed, A+ rated glass is a brilliant option and will perform better than single glazing. At Crown Commercial Windows, we do not use single glazing but ensure that energy efficient materials are used in all of our products to help you insulate your project and reduce your bills.

Is an orangery cheaper than an extension?

Although orangeries are more expensive than conservatories, they are cheaper than a whole extension. Affordable and beautiful, an orangery is a beautiful way to extend your project into your outdoor area, opening up your entire property.
