What is the difference between French windows and French doors?
The opening and closing mechanism are the same for both French windows and French doors, but they differ in size and utility. French doors are big enough to walk through and so can be used as an entrance to your garden, whereas French windows are purely for ventilation.
French door frames and sashes are thicker than what you would find on French windows. They are different sizes too, with French doors giving you a taller and thinner structure than French windows. Regardless of these differences, they both have the similarity of two side-hung sashes which open from the middle with no pillar blocking between. When you open the windows or doors, they both give a full, unblocked view.
Are French windows secure?
French windows follow the same standards of security as all of our other windows at Crown Commercial. Your safety is our utmost concern, so we use high-quality materials, double or triple glazing, and strong lock mechanisms. Our products are approved by the Police-lead scheme, Secured by Design, which aims to reduce neighbourhood burglaries all around the UK. Our locking systems are three-point, with locking shoot-bolts and tough hinges on the windows, as well as having thermally-toughened glazing for windows on the ground floor. Whatever your window choice, our installers ensure your windows are secure and will talk you through the correct ways to lock them.
What are the advantages of French Windows?
French windows are perfect if you are seeking unobstructed views from the comfort of the inside of your project, with no pillars or panels to block. There is also the advantage of effective ventilation due to the structure that allows free-flowing air inside. French windows are brilliant for light, views and ventilation. Why are French windows called French windows?
Both French windows and doors found their name in the 17th century during the Renaissance, where art and architecture were bustling with new ideas. Light became a recurring focus of these designs and glass was the main material used to provide this. Windows contained more glass, which France adopted and started making large enough windows that could be used as doors or balcony openings. In the following decades, this design swept across Western Europe and is still extremely popular today for the light it provides.
Do French windows swing in or out?
You make this decision. Inward opening windows are sometimes chosen for their simple inside cleaning, but heavy curtains could make this difficult.
Outward opening windows are more popular, as they prevent frames from taking space away from your project’s interior. We manufacture our windows with modern anti-slam friction hinges, meaning even though they’re facing outward, strong winds will not budge them. You will also find outward windows gather up less rain and debris in their frames. Nonetheless, you get to make the decision based on what would work best for yourself and your project.
Can French windows be used as a fire escape?
FENSA, the UK government-authorised scheme, says that every room must have fire escape windows so long as they are not 4.5 metres above ground level. Most first floor windows follow this as a standard. Furthermore, they must open 0.3 metres squared to create enough unobstructed space. French windows do open without any obstruction if they are the right size. If the sizing is wrong, they will not be considered a FENSA-approved fire escape window – but ours are.
