Bay and Bow Windows
Most of us wish for more space and light within our project, but don’t have the disposable income to spend on grand extensions. At Crown Commercial Windows, we can show you how to increase space and natural light into your project with just windows. Our bay and bow windows are a trustworthy pick for maximising the beauty of your existing project.
Bay and bow windows are easily customisable to achieve the colour and design you want. Pick from traditional smooth white to rustic wood finishes in a spectrum of colours, and enhance your project’s natural sunshine.
Often considered the traditional option, bay windows give you a shape reminiscent of a trapezoid with three straight sides. The brilliant part is that you can decide what windows you open and which are to primarily provide light.
Similarly, bow windows light up the house. The difference lies in its semicircle shape. Rather than having the windows at a pronounced angle to each other, they are instead elegantly installed to produce a sleek, smooth curve.

How do you hang curtains in a bay or bow window?
The evenings are made for cosy and private nights in. Although hanging curtains are slightly more difficult for these windows than normal ones, all you need to know is the correct fittings. Specialised curtain rods are available for three-section bay windows, allowing the curtain to be pulled all the way around. Curtain hooks include small gaps for the rods to pass through. Alternatively, bendable curtain rods would suit arc-shaped bow windows.
How many sides does a bay window have?
Your traditional bay window consists of three sides away from the wall, creating a trapezoid shape. One window parallel and two at a 45-degree angle to the wall is the common look you will see in the late 19th and early 20th century UK houses. Box bay windows are another style, forming a rectangular shape away from the house. This gives you space to fit chairs or tables without worrying about awkward angles. Britannia Windows can install either for you.
Do bay and bow windows open?
In short, bay and bow windows can open. They are styled with three or more panels, where some or all of them can open. For bow windows, the smooth curve is only possible by having smaller windows. It is usually more practical to just have a few of these panes open, rather than all of them. Bay and bow windows are highly customisable so contact us to discuss how you would like your windows to open.
Do bay or bow windows increase project value?
Bay and bow windows add amazing levels of light and space into your project, which are desirable characteristics. This can significantly increase the value of your project. Reading nooks and play areas are just two suggestions of ways to make most of the added square footage. Your view will be much more panoramic, too. Bay and bow windows cost more than normal windows to install, yet this is only fair due to the level of benefit they bring to your project.
What is the difference between a bay and a bow window?
Bow and bay windows bring you maximum space and light. The way they do this, however, is with different mechanisms. Bay windows are made of three individual windows which come together at angles towards the wall’s exterior. Bow windows contain many more windows, mainly four or six, to create a smooth arc. It is important to note how bow windows are wider than bay windows generally. Give us a call or message to discuss which one would suit your project best.
What can I put in a bay window?
As bay windows offer you the extra space, many decide to snugly fit something there. Additional seating is brilliant for calm reading areas, and you can add storage underneath for your books. Or maybe your pet deserves a new little nook to sleep in? You don’t have to build anything, just add a chair or two for your visitors when they come for coffee. Our brochures provide interior inspiration, as do our experts who you can get in touch with to get bay window inspiration.
